#MicroblogMondays 160: It’s a Mystery

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

A newsletter I read linked to a fascinating (but old — it’s from 2004) long-read article about the mysterious death of an Arthur Conan Doyle expert, Richard Green, and the Sherlockian way the community has gone about trying to figure out what happened.

This is a little different from a regular Sherlock Holmes story because it involves an actual person. I don’t want to say too much about the article and ruin it, but read it.  You’ll find yourself pausing during it, noting strange wordings and wondering if they have any meaning.

I love mysteries for the same reason that I think most people like mysteries: we want to believe that everything can be known if we give the situation enough attention.  Or, a quote from the article understandable with the world today: “The more illogical the world seemed, the more intense the cult surrounding Holmes became.”

Do you like mysteries?

I do. And it makes me crazy when I’m reading or watching a mystery, especially a true life mystery, and it’s not resolved.

I certainly do! I’ll have to come back to read the mysterious article though 😊 ~ Cathy

Hi, I’m Impatiently Infertile (cleary not my given name). This is my first time posting to #MicroblogMondays. My blog is about infertility, endometriosis, IVF, and doing it all with mindfulness about my pre-existing anxiety, depression, and PMDD. Also, there’s swearing, and a light sprinkling of geekery, so fair warning, if that’s not your cup of tea. I hope it is. Happy reading! Thank you for starting this thread. I’ve been reading Stirrup Queens for a long time, and this is very motivating.

I love the quote. Mysteries and the macabre have always intrigued me as both an escape and an outlet for the absurdity of life. Great link!

Oh yes, I like mysteries, but they have to be solvable and without too many crazy leaps of logic, but not too easy, because that’s a water of my Must read the article now.

6 Middle Girl { 09.18.17 at 7:56 am }

I do like mysteries. I haven’t read one in too long of a time. Will be checking out the article.

Raising both hands. I love a good mystery. The last mystery book I read was by Elizabeth George (A Banquet of Consequences). Had a fantastic twist on the ending.

My go-to type of book, although they have to be the low-gore type.

I love mysteries (both in novel & TV form), although I will admit I haven’t read as many of them lately as I used to. I have actually never read any Sherlock Holmes, but I saw just about all of the series with Jeremy Brett, and I LOVE the current incarnation with Benedict Cumberbatch. There was a novel out several years ago called “The Sherlockian” about a murder at a convention of Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts that was kind of fun. (I had to look up the author’s name;
it’s Graham Moore.)

Some of my favourite mystery authors include Alan Bradley (the Flavia de Luce mysteries), Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels and Joan Hess, and of course I read tons of Agatha Christie when I was growing up. I think mystery is one reason why I enjoy genealogy so much, because there’s always something new to be discovered and questions that likely will never be answered. I always tell people that genealogy appeals to my inner Nancy Drew, lol. 😉

I enjoy a good mystery! Will Pocket this article to read later.

11 Lavonne @ the OCD infertile { 09.18.17 at 12:08 pm }

I love mysteries, but I hate suspense. I want to know the whole story line and the ending all at once. LOL! Mainly I’m inpatient.

12 Traci York { 09.18.17 at 1:57 pm }

I love a good mystery! From the book series Encyclopedia Brown to the Science Channel’s TV series Mysteries of the Abandoned! Definitely need to check out that article – thanks for the heads-up, Mel!

Love, love, love mysteries! Elizabeth Peters, Robert Tannenbaum, James Patterson and oh I’m drawing a blank on my other favorite author- she writes the Sharon McCone mysteries set in San Francisco.- Marcia Mueller. It finally came to me typing all that out. LOL But I also love TV mysteries- one of my favorite tv shows as a child was Remington Steele. But then again, Pierce Brosnan? Why wouldn’t it be? lol I too will have to come back to read the article later.

14 Risa Kerslake { 09.18.17 at 4:23 pm }

I have to be in the mood to read mysteries. But I’ve definitely read my share of them. I’ll have to read that article!

15 Jess { 09.18.17 at 5:05 pm }

I love mysteries, especially twisty ones that don’t end all neat and tidy. That article sounds amazing, I’ll have to check it out!

16 Amber { 09.18.17 at 5:33 pm }

I love a good mystery!

17 Charlotte { 09.18.17 at 6:01 pm }

My favorite mystery writer is Agatha Christie. I really enjoy trying to put all the pieces together.

Have you heard of Escape Rooms?? They sound so fun, I have never tried one but would love to. I would like to be in a group of people I know though, instead of being in a random group of strangers.

18 Stephanie (Travelcraft Journal) { 09.18.17 at 6:43 pm }

I do like mysteries, which is probably why I got into the show Lost when it was on. I was so sure that I was putting clues together and figuring everything out, but, in the end, most of it was left unexplained.

19 Chandra Lynn { 09.18.17 at 8:21 pm }

Hmmm…depends on my mood and my level of curiosity. I am interested in “real life” mysteries though, so I’m on my way to reading the article you reference. See ya!

20 katherinea12 { 09.18.17 at 10:23 pm }

I love mysteries. I’m looking forward to reading the article!

21 Lori Shandle-Fox { 09.19.17 at 10:39 am }

Love a good mystery! You’re absolutely right.. that’s what I find most fantastic about Agatha Christie books. It’s all there for you to see. There are no surprises in the last chapter- no characters you never saw before. It’s all laid out… if only I could be clever enough to see it…
