Circle Time: The Show and Tell Weekly Thread

Show and Tell is wasted on elementary schoolers. Join several dozen bloggers weekly to show off an item, tell a story, and get the attention of the class. In other words, this is Show and Tell 2.0. Everyone is welcome to join, even if you have never posted before and just found out about Show and Tell for the first time today. So yank out a photo of the worst bridesmaid’s dress you ever wore and tell us the story; show off the homemade soup you cooked last night; or tell us all about the scarf you made for your first knitting project. Details on how to participate are located at the bottom of this post.

Let’s begin.

Josh gave me the most crantastic credit card cover this weekend (bumping my cranberry sauce at least a week in the Show and Tell line up). Someone from Jews United for Justice gave two of them to Josh and while I see nothing on their website directly linking to how you can get one of these, I’m sure if you bothered them with emails they would send one along.

Not to be Bertha “Retail Therapy” Buzzkill, but I thought this was brilliant. “Kavannah” translates as mindfulness, so printed on the sleeve is a list of things to consider before making a purchase:

Let’s hold up two recent purchases and see if they would have made it through. Cookies are something I need. I cannot borrow one because people do not appreciate having half-digested cookies returned. It was made well enough to last until I made it into the parking lot and ate it. Cookies=money well spent.

Overpriced winter coats for the twins: yes, they needed them. But I could have gotten them a used jacket. It most likely wasn’t made with environmentally sound materials or with fair labour practices. It did not bring joy into our lives–JUFJ, WHY DIDN’T YOU GIVE THIS TO US LAST WEEK?

Anyway, I thought it was very cool. And they are a rockin’ organization. It’s nice to have a credit card cover in and of itself. Even nicer to have one that makes me a smarter shopper.

What are you showing today?

Click here or scroll down to the bottom of this post if this is your first time joining along (hint: link to the permalink for the post, not the main url for your blog). The list is open from now until late Tuesday night and a new one is posted every week.

Want to bring something to Show and Tell?
  • If you would like to join circle time and show something to the class, simply post each Saturday night (or earlier in the week or on Monday if you can’t do the weekend), hopefully including a picture if possible, and telling us about your item. It can be anything–a photo from a trip, a picture of the dress you bought this week, a random image
    from an old yearbook showing a person you miss. It doesn’t need to contain a picture if you can’t get a picture–you can simply tell a story about a single item. The list opens every Saturday night and closes on Tuesday night.
  • You must mention Show and Tell and include a link back to this post in your post so people can find the rest of the class. This spreads new readership around through the list. This is now required.
  • Label your post “Show and Tell” each week and then come back here and add the permalink for the post via the Mr. Linky feature (not your blog’s main url–use the permalink for your specific Show and Tell post).
  • Oh, and then the point is that you click through all of your classmates and see what they are showing this week. And everyone loves a good “ooooh” and “aaaah” and to be queen (or king) of the playground for five minutes so leave them a comment if you can.
  • Did you post a link and now it’s missing?: I reserve the right to delete any links that are not leading to a Show and Tell post or are the blogging equivalent of a spitball.

Buzzkill? Yes. But also very smart.

How was the punkin pie?

Um, yeah, generally I’m quite frugal and quiz myself regularly on whether something is a “want” vs a”need,” but today some retail therapy was in order — and I felt better since the discounts were off the charts remarkable.

I couldn’t use that credit card sleeve….. I am attempting to revive the economy single handedly (without much success, it would seem).

Do tell about the cranberry sauce and the pumpkin pie (I don’t care for that much either.)

My post is up!

How very clever 🙂 I like it.

that’s an interesting credit card cover – we should all think about what we are spending and whether we really need it or whether it has been made using appropriate practices.

I look at it as, well – more practical! We certainly have way too much stuff we NEVER needed!

I have my s&t ready – but I will say
1) My Etsy purchase. I couldn't live without it and neither could the recepiants of the money!

2)Bear's next summer wardrobe from Old Navy! Head to toe – necessities to accessories for $100! (not kidding – everything was $4 or under!)

I posted for anyone who has ever tried to do a good deed, but was foiled, although it was also very, very funny instead.

Scouting for Eww?

is brilliant!

13 Michelle { 11.09.08 at 1:41 pm }

Love that sleeve. It might have saved me from some purchases.

14 Busted { 11.09.08 at 2:03 pm }

Sorry, I deleted the comment because I was signed into the wrong account. This is a good idea but would make me so sad. I don’t think anything I buy would meet those criteria…

That is a great set of things to consider. Also, not a buzzkill if you see shopping as a process wherein the goal is to stick to those guidelines. Then you can feel a warm glow of achievement after your trip when you do. You exchange quantity of stuff bought for the much more lasting buzz of knowing you shop right.

Ok, now I’m going to have to go write them out to stick in my purse…

That is a great reminder to have on hand.

17 Io { 11.09.08 at 7:38 pm }

I should get one of those. Although I generally only use cash to buy anything so I am pretty careful because when it’s gone, it’s gone.

18 Cassandra { 11.09.08 at 7:39 pm }

Thank you for teaching me a new Hebrew word!

No Show and Tell for me this week because of The Great Blog Cross-Pollination, but I’ll be back with a good one next week.

19 Kristine { 11.09.08 at 8:11 pm }

What a great idea! One I could benefit from.

20 Geeks in Rome { 11.10.08 at 4:49 am }

That is a very cool card sleeve. Even though I never buy anything, when I do it’s usually “frivolous” (BOOKS! socks!) I like these reminders.

A little late on the post … but just updated mine!
