Circle Time: The Show and Tell Weekly Thread
Show and Tell is wasted on elementary schoolers. Join several dozen bloggers weekly to show off an item, tell a story, and get the attention of the class. In other words, this is Show and Tell 2.0. Everyone is welcome to join, even if you have never posted before and just found out about Show and Tell for the first time today. So yank out a photo of the worst bridesmaid’s dress you ever wore and tell us the story; show off the homemade soup you cooked last night; or tell us all about the scarf you made for your first knitting project. Details on how to participate are located at the bottom of this post.
Let’s begin.
I am missing the beach this weekend–perhaps it is the rainy, damp weather. The first picture is a sandcastle that we made back in September at Rehoboth (we went to the beach for the hurricane because we’re brilliant).
The second picture is of the teacup ride at Funland. We went to the amusement park one night and the ChickieNob braved a toddler boat ride. She decided to ramp it up to the fire engine ride and discovered on the third loop that she was terrified. At first, I thought she was laughing but as she went by again, I could see that she was screaming. I begged the operator to shut-off the ride mid-cycle and I went to scoop her out of her seat.
After she calmed down, I told her that once upon a time, her grandfather had taken me to this very same amusement park to go on the teacup ride. And once the ride began, I became terrifed. He begged the operator to stop the ride and let me off. The ChickieNob and I trekked through the amusement park to face the teacup ride. It looked really small in retrospect. But I loved that I had a father who would get the operator to stop the ride.

- If you would like to join circle time and show something to the class, simply post each Saturday night (or earlier in the week or on Monday if you can’t do the weekend), hopefully including a picture if possible, and telling us about your item. It can be anything–a photo from a trip, a picture of the dress you bought this week, a random image from a
n old yearbook showing a person you miss. It doesn’t need to contain a picture if you can’t get a picture–you can simply tell a story about a single item. The list opens every Saturday night and closes on Tuesday night.
- You must mention Show and Tell and include a link back to this post in your post so people can find the rest of the class. This spreads new readership around through the list. This is now required.
- Label your post “Show and Tell” each week and then come back here and add the permalink for the post via the Mr. Linky feature (not your blog’s main url–use the permalink for your specific Show and Tell post).
- Oh, and then the point is that you click through all of your classmates and see what they are showing this week. And everyone loves a good “ooooh” and “aaaah” and to be queen (or king) of the playground for five minutes so leave them a comment if you can.
- Did you post a link and now it’s missing?: I reserve the right to delete any links that are not leading to a Show and Tell post or are the blogging equivalent of a spitball.
- If you want it…
I’ve now placed a Show and Tell archive on the sidebar that will be updated each week in case you miss it. And click here for the icon code if you wish to have it for your blog. It links to the archives.

No Way?!* First to show and tell? Hey – a nerd to the bitter end – that’s me!
I’ve linked to both my loss and parenting sites…enjoy!
Ah Cara….you know what I am third…THIRD…third….THIRD! And this is possibly the highest ever position on that bulleted list.
And Mel you bought back a lot of childhood amusement park memories for me. I am wracking my brains to remember the first such instance, I am particularly conscious about!
Love the sand castle. I remember a ride as a teenager that the damn fair guy wouldn’t let me off of. Glad you got chickienob off the ride.
So many people I know who grew up around D.C. spent many holidays at the Delaware beaches. I didn’t make it there until college, and because I, like you, was brilliant, I went in March when it was 40 degrees and almost every business and restaurant was closed. Bethany Beach is where I had my first white pizza.
This week, I am not only a nerd, but a fruity nerd.
I went on the tea cup ride at Disneyworld when I was 8, and nearly barfed. Never again!
I totally miss the beach … especially with the yucky rain/snow mix we’ve got going where I live …
my bean loved the teacups at Disney World.
Awww, poor girl! I’m glad you had a father who would stop the ride, and she a mother who would.
I’d say that the sandcastle is cute, but I don’t want to encourage any reckless hurricane behavior (But it is cute!)
That sand castle does look ready to be destroyed by a monster foot. Must resist urge to step on it…
Mel, is that really a place called Funland? Or is it Disney?
I love how you got ChickieNob off the ride.
When I was a kid, we travelled over to Disneyland. I was HANGING to go on the teacup ride, but they were getting work done to them. I stood there, speechless. Shattered!
Mel- been thinking about your S and T all night. Had to go to Bear’s scrapbook from her first year to find what I was looking for. A picture of her on her first “ride”. It is a relative term as the thing was pretty lame, hosted by the Zuchinni Festival in our town. Yup – all things Zuchinni!
I’ll email you the pic…You’ll get a laugh.
I can’t see a well built sand castle without having an uncontrollable urge to stomp on it…. does that me me a sociopath?
Oof. That’s a horrible feeling when your child is terrific and you are separated from her by velocity and speed and 3 tons of “fun.”
So great that you followed in your dad’s footsteps.
My mom still refuses to ride the teacups.
Good for you for getting ChickieNob off the teacups! I remember riding a miniture ferris wheel and for whatever reason was scared half to death and the operator wouldn’t let me off. Damn carnie.
Today, I will ride anything but you WILL NOT get me on a ferris wheel. Period.
I haven’t made a sand castle in like ages and the tea cups were always my favorite ride! Those and the carousel . . .
**sigh**
Thanks for a fun walk down memory lane. :0)
Hey…I went to the beach once when a hurricaine was coming…got some great discounts!
I’m sharing today!
I am not a good ride person. Rollercoasters especially are terrifying. I have one of those pictures the machine takes while you’re riding and everyone around me is smile-screaming while I am just looking constipated and botoxed.
I am glad you were able to get Chickienob off the ride!!
I miss the beach, too – it’s always such a revitalizing experience.
Ugh! I always hated fair rides. I get motion sickness very easily. The teacups and I were NOT friends. It didn’t take me long to realize that just about anything that vaulted me, spun me or tossed me was a no go for me.
If it makes you feel any better, I had the operator of “The Conquistador” stop the ride once. And I was …. uh, um …. almost 30 years old. Sad,huh?
Am I last?
I always loved amusement park rides as a kid, but I think I didn’t go until I was 6 or 7.
Enjoy some beautiful sunsets from my “backyard” a la Show & Tell style, and make a comment on the late bloomer's "Cross Pollination" while you are at it!
Happy belated anniversary, Mel!
I love that you father stopped the ride for you, and I love even more so that you did the same thing.
I miss the beach also, summer is almost here and I can’t wait !
