#MicroblogMondays 166: Sucking at Halloween
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

Another year, another lack of Halloween costume. Actually, I take that back; I dressed up as the TARDIS a few years ago, but I made the costume so I could wear my jeans and boots with it.
I have great intentions when it comes to dressing up and poor follow-through because I’m always cold. And I hate being cold. So I avoid wearing anything that may make me colder than I already am. I was thinking about going as Veronica from Heathers, but changed my mind once I remember that I would have to wear a skirt and stockings. I go for comfortable over clever every single time.
How do you choose your Halloween costume (or lack thereof?) Do you go for comfortable, or do you go for clever?

I don’t consider myself to suck at Halloween but I don’t wear a costume so maybe I do… I assemble my girls the costumes they want, usually through a combo of purchasing and constructing them myself. I have a Halloween shirt and some silly jewelry that I wear to class Halloween parties. I hand out candy and compliment little kids on their costumes. I suspect you do many of these things too so I’d say neither of us really suck. Also -being cold is the worst. And costumes are uncomfortable. I want to wear my jeans and layers and boots.
I really wish I could see you in the TARDIS costume!
Part of Mumbai, India, where I live, Halloween is not celebrated with much fan fair. Except for some school Halloween parties, it is unheard of. Just few years back, my daughter was invited by her friend for a Halloween party at her school. I searched on net to borrow some ideas for get up. It really helped.
Agree with you, that I will also buy or wear the clothes in which I am comfortable with. Just cant follow the trend blindly!
I have this thing of always feeling cold – i almost hate sleevess and strappy dresses for that reason! Halloween still isn’t as popular in India yet!
I wonder if you can modify Veronica’s outfit for comfort (think wool based stockings or leggings or even doing black jeans). Seriously, comfort is important.
Regardless, I don’t think you’re sucking in any way. Especially with all that is going on in your life (*cough* B’nai Mitzvahs *cough*).
The only year I dressed up as an adult, I was Mary Poppins. It turned out to be one of the most convenient costumes ever – it started pouring while we were out and guess what, the costume had an umbrella!
I haven’t dressed up for Halloween since I was 18. I’m boring.
I’m like you… I have delusions of grandeur, then at the last minute, I peruse my closet and finally just say “screw it”. Last year we all dressed as skeletons– cute and comfortable– that’s my motto. My daughter is usually so enthralled with her own look, I don’t want to draw attention away from her with me looking outlandish. I’ve just been throwing on a fantastic autumn sweater vest. This way I can be festive and publicly embarrass my kids at the same time.
I rarely dress up for Halloween. Haven’t done since 2011, and that was only because I was attending a costume party requiring guests to dress up.
I’m not a huge fan of Halloween. Never have been, even as a child.
I don’t think I’ve dressed up for Halloween in almost 30 years… I did have a Halloweeny fascinator/headband that I wore while handing out treats when we lived at the house, but that was about it. The last time I remember dressing up was shortly after we were married, we went to a big Halloween party/dance with a bunch of dh’s cousins. I think we went as cowboys… we went to the Calgary Stampede as part of our honeymoon & brought back cowboy hats as souvenirs… plaid shirts & jeans, neck scarves, fake handlebar mustaches, easy peasy. I would say when it comes to comfortable vs clever, I tend to go for easy. 😉 E.g., one year when I was at university, I didn’t have much time, money or ideas — so I wound up wearing a long flannel nightgown, bathrobe & fuzzy slippers. I put my hair up in those pink foam rollers & put Noxema cream on my face. 🙂
I had to laugh when I read your complaints about being cold. I saw something on Facebook earlier today about Halloween in Canada & wearing a costume two sizes too big so your parka/winter jacket could fit underneath it — something I distinctly remember doing as a kid. (Heaven forbid you wear a jacket OVER your costume & cover it up, right?)
Though not in connection with Halloween, I’d go for comfortable any day 🙂
I love Halloween, and it is sort of becoming popular here. I have usually worn at least my devil’s horns or cat ear headband each year. Sometimes my cat tail also. I too love comfort over cold any day and the cat costumer is perfect for that. You can wear all black (or whatever you are as a cat), ears on an elastic headband and a tail that you slip a belt through to hold it on. My tail and ears are over 20 years old and still going strong. In later years, I’ve added fur fluff on my wrists, calves and chest. 🙂
I did a last-minute Katniss Everdeen costume the other night that included boots and yoga pants. I was comfy. 🙂
So… I completely suck at it, to the point that I don’t recall if I’ve ever dressed up for Halloween… but as for cotumes I love the ones where people wear a big thing around their body…, like the tardis costume, that sounds cool, or something like a hot dog or peanut butter sandwich would be funny. I also want to get a lion’s mane for my dog sometime….
I go clever only if I have the brainpower to spend on it.
Which means more often than not, I don’t go at all. And when I do, it’s comfortable, like you.
…it hadn’t occurred to me to dress up. For me not sucking at Halloween means remembering to get candy the weekend before and making sure the kids have costumes of their choice that fit.
I haven’t dressed up for Halloween since I was a kid…and even then, I put forth little effort. I think I grabbed a sheet out of the house in an attempt to be a ghost. Ha!
Hahaha. I have to miss work on Halloween because of a medical appointment and I’m kind of relieved that I don’t have to think of a costume. I really should just invest in one or two good ones so I don’t have to always feel cornered by it. Being s teacher I feel like I should make an effort.
