#Microblog Monday 320: Quick or Great?

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

When you send someone an email asking for advice, would you rather get a super quick response to a question, or would you rather wait and get a long, thoughtful, perfect response? For instance, if you wrote Carolyn Hax, would you rather have her write you back a completely sufficient, usable answer the same day, or would you rather have her send back an insightful, mind-changing response a week later? As in, not so late that you don’t need the answer anymore, but a longer wait time than perhaps one wants when they’re on pins-and-needles in the middle of a problem.

No one writes me for advice, but they often write me with questions. Sometimes I am super quick in returning the answer. Other times, I have good intentions to be super quick, but I’m slow AND don’t return an amazing answer. Which is sort of the worst way to be.

I think the two ways above are equally good, but I would take quick response over amazing response. What about you?

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

Give me the amazing, delayed response!

Hm. Is there a medium place? Kidding – I don’t know. But I think I lean toward quick and usable. I am also like you in that if I don’t write back to someone immediately, I tend to forget for far too long and then feel bad when I know my advice isn’t that special.

I also fall into the quick category. I like to do things and move on, quickly. Do the research, make a decision, move on. I also prefer brevity when possible. So sign me up for quick, although I appreciate thorough when it applies to someone else’s need!

In a work setting: quick. I hate being left hanging.

I guess it depends on the advice needed. If it isn’t time dependent, then I’d much rather have the considered, amazing response. Though any response is better than no response.

I agree with Mali that it depends upon the type of advice I need. If it’s a time-sensitive matter, then I obv. need the quicker response, even if it isn’t as detailed or well thought-out, but if the advice sought is not for a time-sensitive matter, I would generally prefer the considered, amazing response.

Hmmmmm. I appreciate the delayed, amazing response more, but I would worry in the interim that the person wasn’t getting back to me or I offended them in some way. So maybe a quick response to say “I got your question, working on my response!” Would be perfect. Ha.

I like quick, but if it’s email…well, I don’t check that much any more. So, if you’re emailing me, you have to catch the right time when I’m actually checking my email.

If it’s an issue that can be simplified, give it to me soon.

If it’s an issue that has nuance and complexity, take your time with it.

How’s that for not quite committing?
