#Microblog Monday 360: La Mer
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

I was this many years old when I discovered that Bobby Darin’s “Beyond the Sea” was a copy of Charles Trenet’s “La Mer.” I discovered this when I downloaded an album of 100 Charles Trenet songs, and then found this copy of him singing it on YouTube. I love this performance. It sounds like the sea and kind of breaks my heart at the same time.

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

Oh, wow. I don’t think I ever heard this before, it’s so understated and beautiful. And then it sent me down a rabbit hole of seeing if he’s credited for “Beyond the Sea” — and Wikipedia does say Charles Trenet, but it’s hard to find it elsewhere, and there was even an interview with one of Bobby Darin’s friends on Fresh Air with Terri Gross, and he talks about writing “Beyond the Sea” and there’s no Charles Trenet mentioned anywhere. Hmmmph.
Have you always been interested in Charles Trenet?
I’m going to a pub quiz tonight, and one of the topics this week is going to be song copies/remakes/remixes. I’m usually terrible at anything like this, but I really hope this question comes up!
And yes, I much prefer the first version.
