#Microblog Monday 362: 3% of the Air

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

There was an opening to a recent Atlantic article that left me stunned (and grossed out) even though it made complete sense in retrospect:

Before you read any further, take a long, slow, deep breath. Congratulations! If you’re sitting in a typical American home, office building, or school, about 3 percent of the air you breathed in recently came out of the lungs of the people in the room with you right now.

I mean, yes, I clearly knew that the air in my lungs wasn’t pristine air that had never been inside another human being. But… it’s one thing to hold it in the back of my head and another to really consider the implications.

As someone who is against cup sharing or eating off another person’s fork, I was squicked out to think about this.

*******

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

I am a big fan of the many accomplished women aerosol scientists that I started following on Twitter since last year. They are publishing, presenting, giving interviews, sharing research and making a difference in COVID and maybe flu and rhinovirus. I do think they feel understandably discouraged that some schools haven’t invested in co2 monitors and HEPA filters. But I love to see women leading the way…

I’ve definitely thought twice about things since the start of the pandemic and have put the kibosh on a lot of sharing. I do think though we still have to enjoy life. I try to draw a line between extreme caution and making all of us in the house neurotic!
