#Microblog Monday 404: The People From Your Neighbourhood
Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

This is fun to play with. It’s a globe, and you can zoom in on your area (or any area) and discover the notable people born there. It’s not a complete set of all notable people born in that area. The directions explain: “Data has been processed to show only one person for each unique geographic location with the highest notability rank.”
I’m not sure how highest notability is determined, but it’s fun to see who is from where. And it cracked me up to see Natalie Portman next to Jesus.
You can also toggle to show the town names so you can center your area on the screen, and then go back to the notable people. Have fun!

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

Oh, that’s really awesome! Notability ratings are hilarious. Trump at 2! But I love #1. I know you do too! I could spend hours.
That is so cool! I had to cross reference with Google Maps though to get my bearings. I had no idea that Walt Whitman was from Long Island. That seems…off brand? 🙂 I loved seeing Dick Smith in Connecticut though, he was an honorary grandfather to me. Definitely interesting juxtapositions!
I’m not sure I’m doing this right — is there a way to zoom in on a particular location? It’s hilarious to me that the globe shows NO ONE from southern Ontario, which is Canada’s most heavily populated area… if anything, the names nudging into that territory are all Americans from states along the land border or the Great Lakes, lol. I did spot a few from Manitoba, where I was born & (mostly) raised — Louis Riel, a famous Metis leader who was hanged by the Canadian government in the late 1800s; Clara Hughes, one of Canada’s most famous Olympians (medals in both summer & winter Olympics, for cycling and speed skating); and Jack Thiessen, a Mennonite writer/academic and expert on the Low German language. I know one of his family members.
P.S. Thanks to Mali for adding my post to the list while I was undergoing gallbladder removal surgery!
