#Microblog Monday 406: The Extended Mind

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I recently read about the concept of the extended mind. So… you know where your body ends and the object begins, right? This is the table, these are my fingertips. The table is one thing and my skin, nerve endings, and bone are another.

But the same line doesn’t exist between the mind and your surroundings. For instance, where does my mind end and your mind begin? You are reading these words from my mind, and they’re going into your mind, but where is the end of my mind and the beginning of your mind? It’s bizarre, right? Like I’m seeing things outside of myself, but I’m processing them in my mind, and it isn’t clear where the object or experience ends and I begin.

Just something to get you thinking today.

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts that are connected to businesses or are sponsored post.

We never know the full impact we have on others’ lives, right? The idea of “legacy” is something that childless-not-by-choice-ers struggle with — but I don’t think any of us will ever know all the ways that we affect others and live on in their lives. I find that comforting.

Huh, so interesting! I didn’t really think of it as legacy though, I thought of it like one of those trippy moments where you sit there and stare at your hand, and wonder “how do I know this is MY hand? Why is this my hand? What are the edges of my consciousness?” I swear no illegal substances involved, just that creepy “what is reality?” rabbit hole.

More to think about! It’s like when you say something, and your mind knows what you meant to say, but someone else’s mind might interpret it completely differently, or in a way we didn’t expect. And what happens when someone finishes your sentence, because they both had the same thought? Mind meld! lol
