#Microblog Monday 485: Accepted Names

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Why was I thrilled to find my name on the accepted names list in Iceland? It’s not as if I am from Iceland, I’m already named, and I’m not naming myself — or anyone else — in Iceland.

But I still checked to see if my name appeared on the approved list. And was super happy to find it.

Is your name on there?

Are you also doing #MicroblogMondays? Add your link below. The list will be open until Tuesday morning. Link to the post itself, not your blog URL. (Don’t know what that means? Please read the three rules on this post to understand the difference between a permalink to a post and a blog’s main URL.) Only personal blogs can be added to the list. I will remove any posts connected to businesses or sponsored posts.

It’s not. Lara & Loreley are. Close, but not quite.

My name is there, but my husband and kids are not. It is interesting that Anne is also listed as a male name, albeit much less popular. My husband’s name is Adam which is pretty common with biblical origins. My daughter is Hannah, but the list only includes Hanna for the spelling.

Not only is my common name in there, but my sister’s less common name is as well (though they attribute the incorrect nationality to it! Her name shows up in a lot of countries, but not the one they say).

Yep, I’m there. Not as “Mali” but as my real name. Malia is the closest to Mali, which is a Thai name I’ve adopted as my pseudonym.

I find it odd that they have a closed list of names, removing any cultural diversity, though it also removes any doubt, I guess.

In NZ, there are names you are not allowed to use, and other names can be declined – eg someone once called their child “Number 16 bus shelter” – presumably based on the place of conception – and I think that was declined though it might have taken some time. And a court case removed the rights of parents to call their kid “Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.” What is wrong with these people? lol It just proves no-one “deserves” to have children. They just have them!

My full name is on there along with multiple alternate spellings. So fun! My daughters’ uncommon names are not. I’m never surprised either way when their names do or don’t show up on lists though. What a fun thing – thanks for sharing!

Mine is there! In two forms, no less
