Summer Olympics

The Paris Olympics begins this Friday. It snuck up on me this time. I don’t think we’ll watch in real time because I’ve never grown accustomed to watching events in the middle of the day. I’ve always been a recap-in-the-evening sort of person.

We will definitely watch women’s gymnastics to see the team, especially Simone Biles. And I’m deeply interested in women’s swimming this year because 15% of the team comes from the same school near me. (Classes of 2015, 2020, and 2023, so not there at the same time.) And, of course, we’ll prioritize the opening ceremony on July 26.

What are you watching? What is your favourite sport? What can you not miss, and what are you okay if you never see?

My daughters and I love the gymnastics and a lot of diving, especially synchronized diving. Track and field. I love it all.

I tend to think I’m more interested in the Winter Olympics, but every time the Summer Games roll around, I find myself glued to the TV! lol I wouldn’t miss the opening & closing, and while I watch a lot of different sports, I especially love watching the swimming. I much prefer watching live vs taped (and Canadian vs US TV network coverage).

I love the athletics (track and field), no matter the event (well, I can do without the hammer throw, but all the others are good!) and no matter if there are no kiwis in it. I pretty much love watching most sports. Weight-lifting, swimming, cycling, shooting, etc. Last Olympics we fell in love with the wall/rock (can’t remember what it’s called) climbing, and I’m looking forward to that again. We’re generally lucky, and get coverage of almost everything, regardless of whether there are NZers competing. I will watch almost all the events with NZers – there are so few compared to the big countries, it is possible to do that.

Time zone will be problematic, though we’ll be able to watch early events before we go to bed. And maybe late events after we get up in the morning. I’m good with watching during the day! I loved Japan last time, because the time difference was only 4 hours. Perfect!

I will not watch boxing or wrestling. Last time I hardly watched any of the gymnastics (except on news items), and I was pretty good with that too. I’m over it – I hate the way they train the gymnasts. Won’t watch the football or basketball either. I feel it’s a bit silly having huge professional sports in the Olympics. Even tennis, though I’ll probably watch that too, just because Rafa is playing. Find the ceremonies a bit “meh” these days. But might end up watching.

Let the games begin!
