Josh and I split the house into sections, and we were going to de-clutter one area each week or so, making the house the most organized space in the world before the twins returned for Thanksgiving break. They would marvel at the order. We would smile and say, “It was nothing.”
Yeah, it was pretty much nothing.
We tackled the first section in the first week. Our kitchen was so organized. We started the second section the second week. We stopped in the middle of it because it was a lot of decisions. We put off making those decisions the next week and the following week until we arrive at today (after Thanksgiving), and we’ve only organized 1.5 sections.
We’re now aiming for summer because decision-making is hard.

#Microblog Monday 464: Digital Cleaning

Gmail often warns me that I’m about to run out of space, which is a bummer because when I first got Gmail, it felt like I would never run out of room. Alas.
I usually delete a few emails with large attachments, but I don’t have many anymore. I just have a lot of normal emails. So I went through and downloaded folders to my computer, checked them, and then deleted them from Gmail, getting back about 11% of my allotted space.
The fun side of cleaning is what it unearths. Old videos and photos. Funny emails that I barely understand because so much time has passed. Old documents from publishers. It almost made the task enjoyable.
And then I backed up my computer because it’s scary only to have things in one place.

#Microblog Monday 463: Time Pessimist

An article in the Guardian explained that time optimists are perpetually late because they always optimistically think they’ve left enough time for something, and they haven’t.
While the article talks about timebenders and timekeepers, they don’t discuss time pessimists. I always think something will take longer than it does, so I’m often too early. I pessimistically Eyeore my way into starting a task, thinking it will take an hour, and then discover that the whole thing took eight minutes.
Are you a time optimist or pessimist?

#Microblog Monday 462: Visualization

Yesterday, I wrote about something I found on Kottke. Today, I bring up something I found via John Green, who was writing about something on Kottke. That feels meta.
It’s about how your brain pictures things. I’m a 1. I’m beyond a 1. I can mentally conjure up how things smell or feel or taste. And see it play out like a movie in my head, or feel my mouth water, or breathe in deeper.
So it’s so interesting to think about someone experiencing 5. Maybe as interesting as he thinks experiencing a 1. Where do you fall on the scale?

Neal.fun put out an internet archive that you can scroll through like an online museum. Can you name the first MP3? When do you think 🙂 (indicating a smile) was first used? What year do you think held the first Amazon order, and what do you think it was?
Go explore and find out.
