#Microblog Monday 447: Thank You, Benches

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

Sometimes when the ChickieNob and I are doing one of our virtual walks, we’ll “pass” a person on a bench, and I’ll say, “I hope we see him the next time we’re in [insert city here].” As if once on a bench means always on a bench.

I was thinking about this because we’ll be near a city beach and planned to sit outside and read for a few hours. It occurred to me that we’d either have to bring a beach blanket or… get sandy? I went on Google street view, and THEY HAVE BENCHES! Thank you, city planners, who thought about how people would want to sit down and look at the water.

#Microblog Monday 446: Guilty Pleasure

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

I just finished reading Bad Summer People, which is a little like White Lotus set on Fire Island. You know someone will die because the book begins with a dead body. But you mostly forget something will happen because the people are so terrifically awful that you’re sucked into their drama even though you’re not really rooting for anyone to win.

I felt guilty enjoying it so much because the residents of the very real Saltaire (the town fictionalized as Salcombe in the book) were upset by early versions of the book satirizing Fire Island life. I’m unsure if any characters or situations were based on real people or events, though I’m assuming from reactions that the answer is yes.

#Microblog Monday 445: Is Social Media… Social?

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Just when I think that social media has ceased to be social, people peek out to say happy birthday, or discuss an article, or reminisce about college. A friend posted a story that sent all of us down a rabbit hole of connected stories and people who have drifted away (whatever happened to them?). Suddenly, it felt like we were all hanging out in someone’s living room, tossing out facts so someone could pull them together into a cohesive memory.

I love that you can’t write it off. That social media keeps popping back up and reminding you that it can be anything we want it to be. We just have to make it happen.

#Microblog Monday 444: Getting Older

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

In honour of my birthday week (because I had to share my birthday with graduation, I think I deserve a week), I give you something fun.

I’ve had 1,225 candles used on my birthday cakes.

The moon has orbited the Earth 655 times.

There were approximately 4,029,967,636 other people alive on Earth back when I was born.

And… October 2nd, 1925 is equidistant to today’s date, with my birthday in the middle. That day, “John Logie Baird successfully transmitted the first television pictures.” Gulp.

Out of 100,000 people born on the same day, approximately 93,049 are still alive.

The history section at the bottom was probably the best part.
Enjoy it with your own birthday.

#Microblog Monday 443: Cool Vacation Idea

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I knew people built vacations around cooking school experiences. One of our favourite restaurants in London built a cooking school, and we’d try it for a day during a longer trip. But I feel pretty confident in my ability to follow a recipe from afar, so we’ve never explored the whole spend-a-day-cooking-somewhere-interesting thing.

But I just found this — building a vacation around a class with an artist. So you can try out a new skill and make something beautiful while exploring somewhere interesting. I looked at the jewelry-making options because I would love to learn. (Like this one!) Or you can choose the place and then see which artists are there.

I love this idea. What would you learn?
