#Microblog Monday 442: Staying the Same

I called a favourite hotel to book a room, and once I said my name, the woman rattled off a bunch of facts about me (like… hotel-focused facts, such as the room I like to stay in) and finished with, “How is your guinea pig?” That is why I stay there. Because the woman at the front desk can name all of our guinea pigs and even sent a condolence card for Truman.

Before she got off, she started rattling through the script of things they always say when you book a room, but she trailed off and said, “You know. Because nothing ever changes here.” That is the other reason I stay. In a world that equates new with better or new with exciting, I like my hotel to be exactly the same. Year after year after year.

#Microblog Monday 441: Kindergarten

The twins’ Kindergarten teacher was an incredible educator. I stayed in touch with her after the kids moved through other grades and the teacher moved out of the area. The twins invited her to their B’nai Mitzvah because they loved her so much.

I reached out to give her an update about the twins, and she shared that she was now a grandmother and sent along pictures. One circle ends, and another one begins. She gets to provide childcare when her daughter goes back to work. My heart was so happy for her.

Some of my happiest moments are reconnecting with someone I haven’t spoken to or seen in a long time, which is strange because I need to lose touch with them to gain that happiness. But it is what it is.

#Microblog Monday 440: Glimmers

I love this idea of the opposite of a trigger. It’s a glimmer. So if something triggering sets off a landslide of bad feelings, a glimmer does the opposite. It creates a sparkle of good feelings. Just as you may know your triggers, you can also discover your glimmers and access them (vs. avoid them). I really love this.

85,000+ likes later, and it seems many other people and organizations do, too.

#Microblog Monday 439: Above You

Space Elevator is the latest interactive website by Neal.Fun. You scroll and get a sense of what happens above you and the distance between each stage of space.

So, for instance, you can see the height various birds can fly, the height paratroopers jump, and the cruising altitude of a passenger jet. And then the Armstrong Limit. The sky changes as you go up, and the counter at the bottom tracks the height from Earth (and the counter in the top right corner tracks the temperature). I felt dizzy when I realized how high Felix Baumgartner was when he did his freefall. And then you keep going and keep going until you reach space.

It is such a brilliant way to teach something.

#Microblog Monday 438: Unsubscribing

Every so often, I enter a new stage of life and join many online communities — from bulletin boards to Facebook groups — to glean information. Most of the time, I remain in those groups because the group drifts apart long before I finish that stage of life.

But it’s different from all the college groups I’ve joined over the last year. I no longer need to stay in them once the twins commit somewhere except to pass backward information to someone in the group. Therefore, I’ve decided to remain active in the groups despite not benefiting from them. Because it’s a comfortable space full of now-familiar names. Still, most people I know at the same stage are leaving the groups now that the life change is behind them.

Do you drop out of groups once an event is finished, or do you allow the group to drift apart with time, staying there long after you need the group?
