#Microblog Monday 437: Arguments

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

I have not explored AI beyond reading transcripts of conversations with Bing, but I am amused by Opinionate, where you pose a question and allow two bots to argue on your behalf. Without signing up, you get one free debate per day; if you sign up, it goes up to three arguments per day.

I asked it something real, and it gave me a surface-y but detailed answer. It pulled real data to argue the point but used one tiny fact to form the whole argument, ignoring everything else. Still, it was pretty impressive. For a bot.

#Microblog Monday 436: Finishing the Book

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

I’m participating in an online book club that meets on the same day each month. I knew the date was creeping closer, but I forgot to finish the book in time. I was okay with the ending being ruined by the first posed question, and I could participate in most of the chat. But afterward, I didn’t know what to do with the book. Should I finish it even though the discussion was over? Drop it for the next book? It felt silly not to read through the final few chapters and see the ending for myself.

This is why I’m not the biggest fan of book clubs — I don’t like reading on a timer. Though I really love the discussion and connection.

Would you finish the book?

P.S. I did.

#Microblog Monday 435: The Final @Midnight

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

We used to DVR @Midnight and bulk watch the episodes at the end of the week. But we never watched the final four episodes. They just sat on the DVR since 2017.

We’re replacing the DVR, which means losing everything on the old unit. So we finally sat down to watch the very last episode, which was the ChickieNob’s very first episode. It was bittersweet to watch old Internet memes and hear the news knowing that comics had no clue how the next six years would unfold.

But it was a good reminder not to save things for a rainy day. Watch the shows you want to watch, read the books you want to read, and eat the chocolate bar instead of leaving it on the shelf to rot.

#Microblog Monday 434: A No-Go List

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

Fodor’s puts out a No-Go list of places not to travel to every year. If that sounds counterintuitive to a travel site, the point is to steer people away from areas that are over-traveled to give them a rest. They explain the three categories: “Natural attractions that could use a break in order to heal and rejuvenate; cultural hotspots that are plagued with overcrowding and resource depletion; and locations around the world immediately and dramatically impacted by water crises.”

Of course, a lot of heavily touristed areas rely on tourists. So not a perfect solution, but it’s an important question to ask yourself before you book tickets: How will my visit impact the place?

#Microblog Monday 433: Making the Bed

Not sure what #MicroblogMondays is? Read the inaugural post which explains the idea and how you can participate too.

*******

Despite being a bit of a neat freak (for instance, I even bleach the inside of the dishwasher), I don’t make the bed. Pretty much ever. We shake out the blankets and make it two seconds before we sleep in it at night, but the bed is left unmade during the day. It means I can collapse in bed briefly without feeling like I’m messing things up.

Lifehacker had an article that while you should make your bed (sorry, Lifehacker), you shouldn’t make it first thing in the morning. You’ll throw up a little reading why. But read it anyway.
