#Microblog Monday 511: Your Re-Reading List

I recently started a new notebook (why do I count my life in notebooks?), and I added a new section to the lists I copy over each time: A re-watching and re-reading list.
It’s not that I don’t know what I like to re-watch or re-read, but seeing it listed out feels like a place I can turn when I am feeling out of sorts and need to remember that there is art that makes me feel better. So the Magician’s trilogy is on there. Thursday Murder Club books. Horowitz and Hawthorne books. Eight Ramona Quimbys. (What? It makes me feel good.) One Day and Us by David Nicholls.
I don’t even need to re-read the whole book. I just need to spend an hour with the characters or setting.
What is on your re-read/re-watch list?

#Microblog Monday 510: Please Vote

Tomorrow is election day in the US, but we voted weeks ago when early voting started. We usually wait until election day and go to our local polling place, but this year, we went to early voting when it opened. My Tuesdays are full of meetings, and I didn’t want to try to time it between two and get stuck in line. But I’m also fairly nervous, and voting early meant I could try to give myself the day to not think about what was happening at the polls.
If you’ve voted early, thank you.
If you haven’t voted yet, please go tomorrow. A lot of domestic policy rides on this election, and every vote counts.

#Microblog Monday 509: Balatro

The Wolvog introduced me to the game Balatro. It’s a roguelike card game, played on the surface like poker. But the various additional cards — jokers, planet cards, etc — increase the impact of the played hand. So you’re taking chances in multiple ways: the hand you play, the booster packs you purchase, the blinds you skip. Even the order of the jokers makes a difference. It became enormous fun once he taught me how to play and explained all of the cards. (I still need to text him when the game unlocks a new one to understand what it means.)
But the thing I love most of all is that when I play, it turns off all notifications and alerts. I don’t see news alerts come in. For thirty minutes or so, I can lose myself in the game and not think about the election or the state of the world. It’s hard to convince myself not to check the news when I can access other apps, but I love that this one gently tells me to shut it all out and turn off my brain for thirty minutes.
Thanks, Balatro.

#Microblog Monday 508: Like Exchange

There was a story/idea going around the Internet a few weeks ago about trip planning Google Doc exchanges; these detailed Google Docs that people compile and trade with recommendations for various cities.
And it sounded like a great idea if you knew the person and knew you traveled similarly. For instance, I know someone who likes to go to vineyards when they travel. We don’t drink. So, a Google Doc with vineyard recommendations wouldn’t be helpful. But someone who loves historical sites and weird finds? That would be a fantastic exchange.
But then I realized I could get that without a Google Doc simply by checking out Rick Steves’ itinerary coupled with Atlas Obscura.
What do you think? Would you use a stranger’s Google Doc?

#Microblog Monday 507: Loop Around

One of the more annoying features of the US health system — and I’m sure the same is true in other countries — is that you need to wait at least one year from your last visit for certain appointments. So if you go on October 14, next year, your appointment has to be after October 15. The year after that, October 16, and so on. You cannot go October 14 this year, and go October 13 next year.
Of course, weekends and appointment openings mean that your yearly visit may get pushed very far off-course. Add in that the twins now live far from their doctor, which means their annual wellness visits have been moved to school breaks.
The visit this year is currently set almost six months beyond the year mark, and I realized that the visit after that will likely not happen at all. We’ll loop around back to summer and start the cycle over.
It would be lovely if you could call into insurance, explain the situation, and reset the timeline. Big plans for when I rule the world.
