Circle Time: The Show and Tell Weekly Thread

Show and Tell is wasted on elementary schoolers. Join several dozen bloggers weekly to show off an item, tell a story, and get the attention of the class. In other words, this is Show and Tell 2.0. Everyone is welcome to join, even if you have never posted before and just found out about Show and Tell for the first time today. So yank out a photo of the worst bridesmaid’s dress you ever wore and tell us the story; show off the homemade soup you cooked last night; or tell us all about the scarf you made for your first knitting project. Details on how to participate are located at the bottom of this post.

Let’s begin.

Josh gave me the most crantastic credit card cover this weekend (bumping my cranberry sauce at least a week in the Show and Tell line up). Someone from Jews United for Justice gave two of them to Josh and while I see nothing on their website directly linking to how you can get one of these, I’m sure if you bothered them with emails they would send one along.

Not to be Bertha “Retail Therapy” Buzzkill, but I thought this was brilliant. “Kavannah” translates as mindfulness, so printed on the sleeve is a list of things to consider before making a purchase:

Let’s hold up two recent purchases and see if they would have made it through. Cookies are something I need. I cannot borrow one because people do not appreciate having half-digested cookies returned. It was made well enough to last until I made it into the parking lot and ate it. Cookies=money well spent.

Overpriced winter coats for the twins: yes, they needed them. But I could have gotten them a used jacket. It most likely wasn’t made with environmentally sound materials or with fair labour practices. It did not bring joy into our lives–JUFJ, WHY DIDN’T YOU GIVE THIS TO US LAST WEEK?

Anyway, I thought it was very cool. And they are a rockin’ organization. It’s nice to have a credit card cover in and of itself. Even nicer to have one that makes me a smarter shopper.

Want to bring something to Show and Tell?
  • If you would like to join circle time and show something to the class, simply post each Saturday night (or earlier in the week or on Monday if you can’t do the weekend), hopefully including a picture if possible, and telling us about your item. It can be anything–a photo from a trip, a picture of the dress you bought this week, a random image
from an old yearbook showing a person you miss. It doesn’t need to contain a picture if you can’t get a picture–you can simply tell a story about a single item. The list opens every Saturday night and closes on Tuesday night.
  • You must mention Show and Tell and include a link back to this post in your post so people can find the rest of the class. This spreads new readership around through the list. This is now required.
  • Label your post “Show and Tell” each week and then come back here and add the permalink for the post via the Mr. Linky feature (not your blog’s main url–use the permalink for your specific Show and Tell post).
  • Oh, and then the point is that you click through all of your classmates and see what they are showing this week. And everyone loves a good “ooooh” and “aaaah” and to be queen (or king) of the playground for five minutes so leave them a comment if you can.
  • Did you post a link and now it’s missing?: I reserve the right to delete any links that are not leading to a Show and Tell post or are the blogging equivalent of a spitball.

I was online looking at handpainted dolls on Production, Not Reproduction’s review blog and while I thought they were really cute, I knew I could make something similar enough. I did purchase some of the wood turnings at the store that look like people but I also picked up a bag of clothespins (um…48 of them for about a dollar) because I love the history of clothespin dolls. I told the ChickieNob I would make her anything she wants and she has started with a wedding party. These are two of the bridesmaids, chatting with each other (and looking a little concerned, I might add) right before the ceremony. Do they think the bride will be left at the altar?

Stay tuned for a clothespin doll version of my fertility clinic complete with tiny wooden stirrups and a doctor with cold hands.

Circle Time: The Show and Tell Weekly Thread

Welcome back to Show and Tell. Everyone is welcome to join, even if you have never posted before and just found out about Show and Tell for the first time today. In fact, we hope you do go back to your blog and post your own Show and Tell item and then return with the link to your post. Details on how to participate are located at the bottom of this post.

Let’s begin.

My Show and Tell this week is this new linking function. It allows people to place their link directly into the post if they’re participating rather than wait for me to drag my lazy ass to my computer and move you from the comment section into the main post. Fancy, right?

So here’s how it works:

  • Write the name of your blog in the top box (ex. Stirrup Queens). Please capitalize your blog name as you would any title (I know, I’m beyond anal).
  • Cut-and-paste the permalink for your post into the second box. The permalink is a permanent link to that particular post and is not the main url for your blog. For instance, the permalink for the post beneath this one is http://stirrup-queens.blogspot.com/2008/10/friday-blog-roundup_24.html. See–it has a few more words and backslashes than the main blog url.
  • Hit enter. You should see yourself listed in the body of this post above the link box.
  • Leave a comment about my show-and-tell item in the comment box below.

Isn’t that simple? Let’s see if it works. If you cannot get the link box to work, please leave a comment below with a link to your post and I will enter it when I can.

In fact, we hope you do go back to your blog and post your own Show and Tell item and then return with the link to your post. Details on how to participate are located at the bottom of this post.

Let’s begin.

If I had enough battery power to download new photos, you would have a picture of my new sassy haircut (hint: higher than my shoulders). But until I replace the batteries this weekend, a picture from BlogHer DC will have to suffice.

It’s almost as if the Twitter gods had read my messages about wanting candy and swept into the lobby to lay out a feast while I listened to a panel on blogging basics. When I went to sit down for the keynote speakers, I was faced with a long banquet table covered with chocolate-covered fruit, gummy worms, malt balls, and several kinds of popcorn. I grabbed the first bag by myself and even went back for a second candy run. But I begged Cecily to do my hording from that point on because I was too embarrassed to go back for thirds. Thirds! No wonder I couldn’t eat at the dinner that followed the keynote. How was I to know?

All in all, BlogHer DC was fantastic. I went to two of the blogging basics panels–sort of for confirmation that I knew how to use software correctly and also to see if I had missed anything along the way (I had). I learned NOT to talk about my cervical mucous online (too late) because it may come back to bite me in the ass later on (the information; not the cervical mucous which has no teeth). I learned that I should provide an “about” page, which I do. I also spoke at my own panel on blogging for a cause.

And as a secondary Show and Tell, what do you think of the finishing touches Cali put on the header–do you like the new site bar up at the top?

Let’s begin.

Beyond the moment when I had to pee so badly that I made Josh pull over to a random hotel so I could go in and use the loo, we had a perfect day. My brother was in Baltimore for a conference so we drove down to the Inner Harbour, reliving our childhood by singing the Power Plant theme song, discussing the merits of Au Coton, visiting the the flag shop where I got the Albania keychain for my first car, and–of course–eating Oasis water ice which is not quite as good as I remember it to be.

But the best part was being out on the Chessie paddleboats in perfect 70 degree weather. No, actually the best part was Josh agreeing to do all the paddling and allowing me to sit my lazy ass in the back with the ChickieNob.

I love Baltimore.
