Every winter, I watch two movies: About a Boy and Love, Actually.  They are as close as I get to a Christmas movie (I’ve never even see It’s a Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol–horror!).  They are not Josh’s favourite movies, therefore, I usually watch them when I know he’ll be working late.

And then it hit me this morning–this would be the first year watching Liam Neeson mourn his fictional wife in the film after he lost his actual wife, Natasha Richardson, this year.  And suddenly, I felt very awkward for some inexplicable reason.

I was complaining to a friend yesterday over coffee about something hurtful that was said to me this week in regards to infertility and pregnancy loss.  “Mel,” my friend said, “the woman was just feeling awkward about her news.  She had to tell you about the latest addition to her bounty of children, and she felt fucking awkward having to say it to you so she got oral diarrhea.”

Which led us into a conversation about a woman who lost her husband and the stupid things people had said to her after the loss due to the speaker’s own discomfort with death.  “But it’s not that hard.  You ask them if they want to talk about the person.  You ask them if you can do specific things for them.  You sit and listen.  You tell them that you’re going to bring over tea and ice cream after the kids have gone to bed and you’re going to hear her memories and look at pictures and help her grieve.  Or if she is the type of person who wants to be left alone, you send a card explaining that there is no expiration date for the shoulder to cry on.”

And yet, here I am, awkwardly shifting from foot to foot in front of the video case, not really sure what to say to Liam Neeson.  To observe that grief on film knowing that he also went through it in real life.  It’s stomach twisting.

It gave me more sympathy for the woman with oral diarrhea.

Off-topic, because I had meant to make my kum-kum my show and tell today for A at Are You Kidding Me who was the recipient of a kum-kum email discussion last night, here it is without further ado.

That is a two-cup pyrex pitcher to give you a sense of size.  It can boil a little under 2 cups of water at a time and then you push a button and the water comes out.

I know that last weekend I stated that I didn’t know if I would even use the new site at all (Stirrup Queens on the Road), and yet, I am seemingly addicted to it.  It’s mostly pictures and video and a few brief stories that are too short for my normal blog but too long for Twitter.

I realized that I could not only live-blog our TOOTPU (the DC IF bloggers) cookie exchange in real time, but I could include pictures, videos, and sound files.  Instantaneously.  You could email me and say, “turn the camera on Leah and have her give me a video message” and I could turn the camera on Leah and have her give you a video message.  How crazy is that?

I really think I’m in love with this new space.

I will never give up Stirrup Queens itself, but I can see myself using this other space more and more.  Just to record moments and small things I notice.

I got really confused with the term “seven year itch” in regards to marriage.  Does it refer to that period of time leading up to the 7th year, or is it the entire 7th year until the 8th anniversary?  Being the anal person I am, I really wanted to know when I was supposed to grow bored with Josh.

Because I haven’t.

And I’m excited to say that we have made it through the seventh year of marriage unscathed, celebrated our 8th anniversary, and are still massively in love–the sort of love that makes one vomit a bit in their mouth when they hear about it because it’s the sort of love that beckons unicorns forward and makes rainbows shoot across the room.

You know, that sort of love.

For our anniversary, Josh bought me a pair of ballet shoes.  Not pointe shoes, because that would be unethical, but a lovely pair of black slippers.  And by “bought” I mean that he gave me the head nod when I told him that I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeded them.

Happy anniversary, Josh, and thank you for eight wonderful years of marriage.  And the ballet shoes.

Wishes for 11/11 certainly aren’t closed, keep adding them, but it’s time for Show and Tell too.  Class, come to order.  You, in the back, spit out your gum.

This week, Serenity was in town, so Somewhat Ordinary (she’s invite only) came up and Lindsay and I went downtown (well, I went downtown later and only joined the threesome for lunch).  It was chaotically wonderful, especially because the last time I saw Serenity, she hadn’t conceived Owen yet and Lindsay wasn’t parenting (despite reading Somewhat Ordinary since her blog began years ago and despite the fact that we live somewhat close-ish, this was our first time getting to actually be face-to-face!).  And it just amazes me what can happen in two years.

On a different blogger note, Kristin told me to expect some packages in the mail and I was a little confused.  When they arrived, I opened them and started crying at the generosity.  Kristen, Cassandra, Wiseguy, Dora, and Mrs. Spock put together a package of holiday ornaments.  My kitchen table was covered in a sea of blue.  Thank you so much–this meant the world to me.

A few days before Halloween, the twins and I decorated a pumpkin we named Gordo the Quintops, mostly (but not entirely) because Gordo has five eyes.

He was lovingly covered in letter stickers and feathers and sequins, with a few random shells from the ocean last summer.  Gordo was not placed outside because pumpkins covered in sequins are not fond of the rain.  Instead, he resides in our front hallway so that he is the first thing you see when you step inside the house.

My heart wasn’t into Halloween this year, but we took the twins around to a few houses for trick-or-treating.  Before we left the house, they were concerned because I wasn’t wearing a costume so I quickly made a third eye for myself and slapped it on my forehead and went as a triops.

What is a triops, you ask?  It is a prehistoric shrimp with three eyes.  The ChickieNob drew this lovely drawing of a triops for you so you could get a sense of its greatness.  Please ignore the fact that the ChickieNob’s triops looks like an alien and not like a miniature horseshoe crab as it states on the Wikipedia page.
